Le titre « Carrelage » fait référence aux "musiques d’ameublement" d' Erik Satie composée entre 1917 et 1923. Presque immobiles, répétitives et décoratives ; caractérisées par leurs simplicités d'écriture et par un matériau musical peu développé. Pour Jankélévitch, refuser de développer le matériau musical s'explique dès lors qu'on conçoit ce refus comme une discrétion dans l'expression des sentiments.
